Scenteq — scenting spaces
Aroma ambience in a sunlit contemporary lobby with soft natural light

Benefits of scenting

What scent actually does for a commercial space.

Aroma ambience is not decoration. Done properly it changes how long people stay, what they remember and how a building smells at 7am and 7pm.

In short

Why businesses scent their buildings

Every commercial interior is specified in detail — light levels, acoustics, materials, furniture. Air is usually the exception. Ambient scenting closes that gap: a low, constant fragrance level, matched to the volume of the room and the way air moves through it.

The benefit is rarely the fragrance itself. It is consistency. A space that smells the same every day, at the right strength, reads as well-run — and that impression carries over to the service, the product and the brand behind it.

A space that feels finished

Lighting, acoustics and materials are specified. Air usually isn't. Scent is the last layer that makes a room read as considered rather than merely clean.

Longer dwell time

Environments that feel pleasant are ones people stay in. Research into ambient scent consistently points to longer browsing and lingering, particularly in retail and hospitality.

Stronger brand recall

Smell reaches memory more directly than sight or sound. A consistent scent across sites gives a brand something competitors cannot copy from a photograph.

Odour control, not masking

Gyms, washrooms, kitchens and lifts create predictable odour problems. A properly dosed system manages the baseline instead of covering it after the fact.

A better place to work

Staff live in the space all day. Scent is dosed for people who never leave the room, not for a visitor passing through once.

Consistency across an estate

One specification, repeated. Every site smells the same on a Tuesday morning as it does on a Saturday afternoon.

Aroma ambience

Where ambience is won or lost

Ambience is a dosing problem before it is a fragrance problem. The same scent at the wrong output reads as either absent or artificial. These are the areas where getting it right matters most.

  • Arrival areas, where first impressions are formed in seconds
  • Lobbies, atria and lift lobbies with high air movement
  • Retail floors and fitting rooms where dwell time matters
  • Bars, lounges and private dining, scented with restraint
  • Treatment rooms and quiet zones with low, steady output
  • Changing rooms, washrooms and studios with odour pressure

Delivery

How the benefit is engineered

Standalone systems

Up to 500m² per unit, cold-air diffusion, no plant required. Best for single rooms, receptions, studios and boutique sites.

HVAC scenting

Fragrance introduced into duct work so an entire floor or building carries the same character from one serviceable point. Up to 1,000m² per system.

AHU scenting

Specified at the air handling unit itself, with output matched to that unit's supply air volume and the areas downstream of it.

Measurement

How to judge whether it worked

  • Coverage: does every intended area smell the same, at the same strength?
  • Intensity: noticeable on entry, unnoticed after five minutes
  • Consistency: identical readings at opening and at peak occupancy
  • Consumption: millilitres per hour against the plan you were quoted
  • Feedback: staff and customer comments, gathered after four weeks

FAQs

Benefits of scenting: FAQs

What are the main benefits of scenting a commercial space?
A well-specified system makes a space feel considered, extends dwell time, strengthens brand recall, controls predictable odours and improves the day-to-day environment for staff. In multi-site estates it also makes the experience consistent between locations.
What is aroma ambience?
Aroma ambience is the background fragrance character of a space — the scent you notice on arrival and stop noticing once you settle. It is created by dosing fragrance at a low, steady rate matched to the room's volume and air movement, rather than by spraying a strong scent intermittently.
Does scent marketing actually influence behaviour?
Published research links pleasant ambient scent with longer dwell time and more favourable evaluations of a space. Effects vary by sector and by how appropriate the fragrance is to the environment, which is why we specify per building rather than sell one scent to everyone.
Is ambient scenting safe for staff and customers?
Our fragrances are IFRA-certified and dosed well below the levels used in retail consumer products. Systems are set so scent is perceptible on entry and recedes with habituation, which is both the safer and the more effective approach.
Do I need an HVAC system to scent a building?
No. Standalone units cover spaces up to 500m² and need only power. Where a building has central plant, HVAC or AHU scenting covers up to 1,000m² per system from a single serviceable point.
How much does commercial scenting cost?
Standalone systems start at £599 ex VAT outright, or £59 per month billed annually with fragrance, servicing and support included. HVAC and AHU systems start at £799 ex VAT, or £99 per month billed annually.
How long before the benefits show?
The ambience change is immediate. Behavioural effects — dwell, feedback, repeat visits — are best judged after four to six weeks, once the system is commissioned and staff have stopped noticing it.

The lobby reads as finished now. Guests do not comment on the fragrance — they comment on the hotel feeling more expensive.
